In 30 days I'll be flying to Dallas to begin my trip to New Mexico where I'll begin my academic career at Eastern New Mexico University. I've been waiting for this a long time and have had some obstacles to overcome along the way; some big, some small.
I decided to start this blog because even in the age of the internet, finding information on Portales and ENMU has proven difficult. Part of my delay in starting at ENMU had to do with that lack of information and clear communication so I hope that perhaps I can help out other students who might be coming to ENMU and don't know the area. Also, I wanted a place to document my own thoughts through my university experience.
Because I'm not driving there, one of the biggest headaches I've been dealing with in the last couple weeks is making travel plans to get to Portales and trying to figure out how I'll get around until I get a vehicle.
I looked at flights to all the nearest larger cities; Albuquerque, Amarillo, Lubbock, Santa Fe. That part was pretty straight forward. I called some of the car rental agencies to see about renting a car and driving, but I couldn't find a one-way drop off in Portales. The train was a no-go as well and the bus doesn't have a direct route from any of the cities above, but does have one from Dallas. It also appears that there is no taxicab service in town so getting my luggage to student housing is gonna be a pain.
There is information on the City of Portales website about PATS, a public transportation service, but the service has limited hours and requires an advance notice of 1 day.
